Photos in Wax Workshop

Description

Join visual artist Candace Law on Friday and Saturday, May 20-21 from 10 am to 4 pm each day in a workshop you won’t want to miss! You’ll be hands-on, working with different ways to use photo images you’ve taken and creatively pair them with Encaustic. How fun is that! The cost is just $295, and all materials are included.

You will learn several processes that include:

  • transferring images onto a waxed surface
  • embedding images printed on thin papers
  • hand-coloring photos using pan pastels or pigment sticks
  • doing a wax pour
  • and other cool things

This will be an exploration of techniques many artists use to bring photographic images into their creative work, and it is going to be a lot of fun. So dig out your phone or camera, go through some old photo prints, and sign up early; there are a limited number of spots available. You will be covering a lot of ground to push and enhance your photo/wax/mixed media work, so some basic experience with encaustic will be helpful.

Demonstrations and group discussion, as well as individual work time and one-on-one time with the instructor will fill out each day. The discussion and review at the end of each day is a critical part of the learning process, so attendance is expected from 10 am to 4 pm. This workshop will be a great opportunity for you to add to your creative toolbox.

As always, the equipment and most materials are provided. You will be asked to email ahead of the workshop one image that will be printed and glued to a panel ahead of time for you to use on Friday; then bring with you 4 or 5 additional photos or images to use in class. More details will be provided in a separate email in advance of the workshop.

“Welcome Back…Again” Encaustic Workshop

“Welcome Back…Again” Encaustic Workshop

Description

Join visual artist Candace Law on Saturday, March 26 from 9:30 am to 4:30 pm as she welcomes artists back to the studio…again…for the first encaustic workshop of the year. The cost is just $165, and all materials are included.

Spring is in the air and with it, our thoughts turn to new art challenges. This workshop will be an introduction to the medium for beginners, as well as a refresher for those who have worked in hot wax before but would like to be reminded of some of the basics again before settling into their work

If you’ve heard about this lovely, versatile medium and have wanted to give it a try before committing to buying all the equipment and supplies—this is the workshop for you. Everything is provided, and you’ll get the opportunity to ask all your questions and try some different techniques.

If you’ve worked with encaustic before, but haven’t done so since COVID started, trust me, you might like a refresher. Not only will it remind you of some of the basics and best practices, but you might also learn something new or glean an idea that sparks your creativity. It is also a great time to connect with other artists again after our hibernation.

In the workshop, we will cover the equipment and materials commonly used, the basic process of painting, and move on to work three small projects that cover painting in encaustic, using hot wax to embed items and another technique as we have time. This is the perfect time to learn or get back in the flow before more challenging workshops come in the spring and summer.

Looking ahead: we will be working with Encaustic and Photographs at the end of May, and on to Shellac Burns (among other materials) in the summer months. You will get the most out of these future workshops if you’ve had some basic work with the medium, or a good refresher before then.

BIG INK Woodblock Printing Event

BIG INK Woodblock Printing Event

Saturday, October 16
Sunday, October 17
11am-4pm each day
Free and open to the public

Join us! You’re invited to Color | Ink Studio & Gallery to watch as 14 artists print large-scale woodblocks on the “Big Tuna”, BIG INK’s giant mobile printmaking press! BIG INK, a New England-based arts business, is teaming up with Color | Ink Studio to present this event for the first time in the metro-Detroit area.

Each of the artists started work on their giant woodblocks in August using traditional Japanese chisels. BIG INK Director Lyell Castonguay has been guiding them through online instruction over the last two months. All the work leads up to a two-day public demonstration this weekend as the press produces paper prints from the woodblocks — essentially giant wooden stamps up to 4 feet by 8 feet.

“Seeing woodblocks printed at this scale is impressive,” Castonguay says. “(It’s) like magic. The woodblock is inked, sent through the press, and an image appears on the paper. It’s like watching a rabbit pulled out of a hat.”

Color | Ink Studio will be open to visitors from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. There will be a hands-on community art-making activity featuring small woodblock prints. Admission is free.

Saturday’s participating artists are Theresa Ann Moore, Candace Law, Kelly Vander Kley, Lavinia Hanachiuc, Leanne Su, and Don Kilpatrick.

Sunday’s participating artists are Martine MacDonald, Pat Duff, Katrina Maria Dienno, Madeleine Barkey, Emily J Legleitner, Robin Jourdan, Beverly Booth, and Frank Dulin.

“Welcome Back to Encaustic” Workshop

Description

Join visual artist Candace Law on Thursday, August 12 from 10 am to 4 pm as she welcomes artists back to the studio for the first “back to normal” encaustic workshop. The cost is just $145.

The day will begin with a review of the process and materials to get you warmed up, followed by demonstrations of several techniques that might have become “rusty” for you like creating texture, collage, and stencils. As always, there will be ample time for you to work individually.

Want more time to delve deeper as well as enjoy the company of other artists? Then register for Thursday and Friday, and have a second day for additional work as well as trying mark-making media and creating monotypes. The cost for both days is only $250.

Or are you curious about encaustic and want to give it a try? First-timers are always welcome, and you’ll receive plenty of instruction as you learn about this wonderfully expressive medium.

The equipment, supplies, and many materials needed for the workshop are provided. Candace will be present on both days to provide guidance and answer your questions one-on-one as you work.
